Rebecca S. Wilder, RDH, MS
Rebecca Wilder graduated with a BS and MS degree in Dental Hygiene Education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She is a Professor and Director of Faculty Development for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. She also serves as Director of the Master of Science Degree Program in Dental Hygiene Education and the Interim Director of the undergraduate dental hygiene programs. She taught periodontology to dental hygiene students for 10 years and currently teaches management/administration and thesis / research design. She is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dental Hygiene. She also served as an author for the Second Edition of Mosby’s Dental Hygiene: Concepts, Cases, Competencies published in 2008. Rebecca has served as chair of the ADHA Institute for Oral Health Research Grant Review Committee, the ADHA Council on Research and President of the Oral Health Research Group of the International Association of Dental Research. Rebecca has received numerous awards including the Colgate/IADR Oral Health Research Award for outstanding accomplishments in oral health research, the Pfizer/ADHA Award for Excellence in Dental Hygiene and the Dr.Bicuspid Educator of the Year Award. In 2012, she was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU), the dental honor society. She was a Fellow in the 2007-08 ADEA Leadership Institute though the American Dental Education Association. Rebecca has published over 100 articles and abstracts in professional journals. She speaks internationally in the areas of periodontics, oral-systemic health, risk and practice management.
Hot Topics in Periodontology!
This course will discuss important questions asked by dental hygienists from coast to coast regarding evidence based practice of periodontal patients! Topics will include an overview of the latest topics of interest in the field of periodontology such as evidence based decision making, oral-systemic disease, and products and therapies that have the most evidence for use in contemporary practice. Each participant will leave the course with web resources that will enhance the everyday practice of dentistry/dental hygieneand assist them as they practice according to an evidence based philosophy.
Upon completion of this continuing education program, the participant will be able to:
- Describe current evidence about oral-systemic disease.
- Describe current evidence regarding best practices for assessing risk for periodontal disease.
- Discuss evidence based therapies to use for nonsurgical periodontal therapy.
- Describe the latest instruments and equipment available for nonsurgical care of patients.
- Discuss laser therapies and other technologies for periodontal care of patients.
- Describe the evidence regarding antibiotics and antimicrobials for the treatment of periodontal disease including systemic, topical (mouthrinses, pastes) and controlled-release products.
The course described above is a full day continuing education course.
